Surah An-Najm in Arabic and English

1. 1 An-Najm 53:1

   وَالنَّجْمِ اِذَا هَوٰىۙ

   Transliteration

   Waalnnajmi ithā hawā

   Translation

   By the star when it descends,

2. 2 An-Najm 53:2

   مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوٰىۚ

   Transliteration

   Mā ḏalla ṣāḥibukum wamā ghawā

   Translation

   Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,

3. 3 An-Najm 53:3

   وَمَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوٰىؕ

   Transliteration

   Wamā yanṭiqu ʿani alhawā

   Translation

   Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.

4. 4 An-Najm 53:4

   اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحٰىۙ

   Transliteration

   In huwa illā waḥyun yooḥā

   Translation

   It is not but a revelation revealed,

5. 5 An-Najm 53:5

   عَلَّمَهُ شَدٖيدُ الْقُوٰىۙ

   Transliteration

   ʿallamahu shadeedu alquwā

   Translation

   Taught to him by one intense in strength -

6. 6 An-Najm 53:6

   ذُو مِرَّةٍؕ فَاسْتَوٰىۙ

   Transliteration

   Thoo mirratin faistawā

   Translation

   One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

7. 7 An-Najm 53:7

   وَهُوَ بِالْاُفُقِ الْاَعْلٰىؕ

   Transliteration

   Wahuwa bialofuqi alaʿlā

   Translation

   While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.

8. 8 An-Najm 53:8

   ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلّٰىۙ

   Transliteration

   Thumma danā fatadallā

   Translation

   Then he approached and descended

9. 9 An-Najm 53:9

   فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ اَوْ اَدْنٰىۚ

   Transliteration

   Fakāna qāba qawsayni aw adnā

   Translation

   And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.

10. 10 An-Najm 53:10

    فَاَوْحٰٓى اِلٰى عَبْدِهٖ مَٓا اَوْحٰىؕ

    Transliteration

    Faawḥā ilā ʿabdihi mā awḥā

    Translation

    And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed.

11. 11 An-Najm 53:11

    مَا كَذَبَ الْفُؤٰادُ مَا رَاٰى

    Transliteration

    Mā kathaba alfuādu mā raā

    Translation

    The heart did not lie [about] what it saw.

12. 12 An-Najm 53:12

    اَفَتُمَارُونَهُ عَلٰى مَا يَرٰى

    Transliteration

    Afatumāroonahu ʿalā mā yarā

    Translation

    So will you dispute with him over what he saw?

13. 13 An-Najm 53:13

    وَلَقَدْ رَاٰهُ نَزْلَةً اُخْرٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Walaqad raāhu nazlatan okhrā

    Translation

    And he certainly saw him in another descent

14. 14 An-Najm 53:14

    عِنْدَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهٰى

    Transliteration

    ʿinda sidrati almuntahā

    Translation

    At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -

15. 15 An-Najm 53:15

    عِنْدَهَا جَنَّةُ الْمَأْوٰىؕ

    Transliteration

    ʿindahā jannatu almawā

    Translation

    Near it is the Garden of Refuge -

16. 16 An-Najm 53:16

    اِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Ith yaghshā alssidrata mā yaghshā

    Translation

    When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].

17. 17 An-Najm 53:17

    مَا زَاغَ الْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغٰى

    Transliteration

    Mā zāgha albaṣaru wamā ṭaghā

    Translation

    The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].

18. 18 An-Najm 53:18

    لَقَدْ رَاٰى مِنْ اٰيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الْكُبْرٰى

    Transliteration

    Laqad raā min āyāti rabbihi alkubrā

    Translation

    He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.

19. 19 An-Najm 53:19

    اَفَرَاَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزّٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Afaraaytumu allāta waalʿuzzā

    Translation

    So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza?

20. 20 An-Najm 53:20

    وَمَنٰوةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الْاُخْرٰى

    Transliteration

    Wamanāta alththālithata alokhrā

    Translation

    And Manat, the third - the other one?

21. 21 An-Najm 53:21

    اَلَكُمُ الذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ الْاُنْثٰى

    Transliteration

    Alakumu alththakaru walahu alonthā

    Translation

    Is the male for you and for Him the female?

22. 22 An-Najm 53:22

    تِلْكَ اِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضٖيزٰى

    Transliteration

    Tilka ithan qismatun ḏeezā

    Translation

    That, then, is an unjust division.

23. 23 An-Najm 53:23

    اِنْ هِيَ اِلَّٓا اَسْمَٓاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَٓا اَنْتُمْ وَاٰبَٓاؤُ۬كُمْ مَٓا اَنْزَلَ اللّٰهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطَانٍؕ اِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ اِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى الْاَنْفُسُۚ وَلَقَدْ جَٓاءَهُمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمُ الْهُدٰىؕ

    Transliteration

    In hiya illā asmāon sammaytumoohā antum waābāokum mā anzala Allāhu bihā min sulṭānin in yattabiʿoona illā alththanna wamā tahwā alanfusu walaqad jāahum min rabbihimu alhudā

    Translation

    They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.

24. 24 An-Najm 53:24

    اَمْ لِلْاِنْسَانِ مَا تَمَنّٰىؗ

    Transliteration

    Am lilinsāni mā tamannā

    Translation

    Or is there for man whatever he wishes?

25. 25 An-Najm 53:25

    فَلِلّٰهِ الْاٰخِرَةُ وَالْاُو۫لٰىࣖ

    Transliteration

    Falillāhi alākhiratu waaloolā

    Translation

    Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].

26. 26 An-Najm 53:26

    وَكَمْ مِنْ مَلَكٍ فِى السَّمٰوَاتِ لَا تُغْنٖى شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا اِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ اَنْ يَاْذَنَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ يَشَٓاءُ وَيَرْضٰى

    Transliteration

    Wakam min malakin fee alssamāwāti lā tughnee shafāʿatuhum shayan illā min baʿdi an yathana Allāhu liman yashāo wayarḏā

    Translation

    And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.

27. 27 An-Najm 53:27

    اِنَّ الَّذٖينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْاٰخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ الْمَلٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ الْاُنْثٰى

    Transliteration

    Inna allatheena lā yuminoona bialākhirati layusammoona almalāikata tasmiyata alonthā

    Translation

    Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names,

28. 28 An-Najm 53:28

    وَمَا لَهُمْ بِهٖ مِنْ عِلْمٍۜ اِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ اِلَّا الظَّنَّۚ وَاِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنٖى مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔاۚ

    Transliteration

    Wamā lahum bihi min ʿilmin in yattabiʿoona illā alththanna wainna alththanna lā yughnee mina alḥaqqi shayān

    Translation

    And they have thereof no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all.

29. 29 An-Najm 53:29

    فَاَعْرِضْ عَنْ مَنْ تَوَلّٰى عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ اِلَّا الْحَيٰوةَ الدُّنْيَاؕ

    Transliteration

    Faaʿriḏ ʿan man tawallā ʿan thikrinā walam yurid illā alḥayāta alddunyā

    Translation

    So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life.

30. 30 An-Najm 53:30

    ذٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِؕ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبٖيلِهٖ وَهُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اهْتَدٰى

    Transliteration

    Thālika mablaghuhum mina alʿilmi inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḏalla ʿan sabeelihi wahuwa aʿlamu bimani ihtadā

    Translation

    That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.

31. 31 An-Najm 53:31

    وَلِلّٰهِ مَا فِي السَّمٰوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْاَرْضِۙ لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذٖينَ اَسَٓاؤُ۫ا بِمَا عَمِلُوا وَيَجْزِيَ الَّذٖينَ اَحْسَنُوا بِالْحُسْنٰىۚ

    Transliteration

    Walillāhi mā fee alssamāwāti wamā fee alarḏi liyajziya allatheena asāoo bimā ʿamiloo wayajziya allatheena aḥsanoo bialḥusnā

    Translation

    And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -

32. 32 An-Najm 53:32

    اَلَّذٖينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَـبَٓائِرَ الْاِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ اِلَّا اللَّمَمَؕ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الْمَغْفِرَةِؕ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ اِذْ اَنْشَاَكُمْ مِنَ الْاَرْضِ وَاِذْ اَنْتُمْ اَجِنَّةٌ فٖي بُطُونِ اُمَّهَاتِكُمْۚ فَلَا تُزَكُّٓوا اَنْفُسَكُمْؕ هُوَ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقٰىࣖ

    Transliteration

    Allatheena yajtaniboona kabāira alithmi waalfawāḥisha illā allamama inna rabbaka wāsiʿu almaghfirati huwa aʿlamu bikum ith anshaakum mina alarḏi waith antum ajinnatun fee buṭooni ommahātikum falā tuzakkoo anfusakum huwa aʿlamu bimani ittaqā

    Translation

    Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.

33. 33 An-Najm 53:33

    اَفَرَاَيْتَ الَّذٖي تَوَلّٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Afaraayta allathee tawallā

    Translation

    Have you seen the one who turned away

34. 34 An-Najm 53:34

    وَاَعْطٰى قَلٖيلًا وَاَكْدٰى

    Transliteration

    Waaʿṭā qaleelan waakdā

    Translation

    And gave a little and [then] refrained?

35. 35 An-Najm 53:35

    اَعِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ الْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرٰى

    Transliteration

    aʿindahu ʿilmu alghaybi fahuwa yarā

    Translation

    Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?

36. 36 An-Najm 53:36

    اَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فٖي صُحُفِ مُوسٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Am lam yunabba bimā fee ṣuḥufi moosā

    Translation

    Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses

37. 37 An-Najm 53:37

    وَاِبْرٰهٖيمَ الَّذٖي وَفّٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waibrāheema allathee waffā

    Translation

    And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -

38. 38 An-Najm 53:38

    اَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ اُخْرٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Allā taziru wāziratun wizra okhrā

    Translation

    That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another

39. 39 An-Najm 53:39

    وَاَنْ لَيْسَ لِلْاِنْسَانِ اِلَّا مَا سَعٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waan laysa lilinsāni illā mā saʿā

    Translation

    And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives

40. 40 An-Najm 53:40

    وَاَنَّ سَعْيَهُ سَوْفَ يُرٰىۖ

    Transliteration

    Waanna saʿyahu sawfa yurā

    Translation

    And that his effort is going to be seen -

41. 41 An-Najm 53:41

    ثُمَّ يُجْزٰيهُ الْجَزَٓاءَ الْاَوْفٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Thumma yujzāhu aljazāa alawfā

    Translation

    Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense

42. 42 An-Najm 53:42

    وَاَنَّ اِلٰى رَبِّكَ الْمُنْتَهٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waanna ilā rabbika almuntahā

    Translation

    And that to your Lord is the finality

43. 43 An-Najm 53:43

    وَاَنَّهُ هُوَ اَضْحَكَ وَاَبْكٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waannahu huwa aḏḥaka waabkā

    Translation

    And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep

44. 44 An-Najm 53:44

    وَاَنَّهُ هُوَ اَمَاتَ وَاَحْيَاۙ

    Transliteration

    Waannahu huwa amāta waaḥyā

    Translation

    And that it is He who causes death and gives life

45. 45 An-Najm 53:45

    وَاَنَّهُ خَلَقَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْاُنْثٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waannahu khalaqa alzzawjayni alththakara waalonthā

    Translation

    And that He creates the two mates - the male and female -

46. 46 An-Najm 53:46

    مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ اِذَا تُمْنٰىۖ

    Transliteration

    Min nuṭfatin ithā tumnā

    Translation

    From a sperm-drop when it is emitted

47. 47 An-Najm 53:47

    وَاَنَّ عَلَيْهِ النَّشْاَةَ الْاُخْرٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waanna ʿalayhi alnnashata alokhrā

    Translation

    And that [incumbent] upon Him is the next creation

48. 48 An-Najm 53:48

    وَاَنَّهُ هُوَ اَغْنٰى وَاَقْنٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waannahu huwa aghnā waaqnā

    Translation

    And that it is He who enriches and suffices

49. 49 An-Najm 53:49

    وَاَنَّهُ هُوَ رَبُّ الشِّعْرٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waannahu huwa rabbu alshshiʿrā

    Translation

    And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius

50. 50 An-Najm 53:50

    وَاَنَّهُٓ اَهْلَكَ عَادًاۨ الْاُو۫لٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waannahu ahlaka ʿādan aloolā

    Translation

    And that He destroyed the first [people of] 'Aad

51. 51 An-Najm 53:51

    وَثَمُودَا۬ فَمَٓا اَبْقٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Wathamooda famā abqā

    Translation

    And Thamud - and He did not spare [them] -

52. 52 An-Najm 53:52

    وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِنْ قَبْلُؕ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا هُمْ اَظْلَمَ وَاَطْغٰىؕ

    Transliteration

    Waqawma nooḥin min qablu innahum kānoo hum athlama waaṭghā

    Translation

    And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.

53. 53 An-Najm 53:53

    وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ اَهْوٰىۙ

    Transliteration

    Waalmutafikata ahwā

    Translation

    And the overturned towns He hurled down

54. 54 An-Najm 53:54

    فَغَشّٰيهَا مَا غَشّٰىۚ

    Transliteration

    Faghashshāhā mā ghashshā

    Translation

    And covered them by that which He covered.

55. 55 An-Najm 53:55

    فَبِاَيِّ اٰلَٓاءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارٰى

    Transliteration

    Fabiayyi ālāi rabbika tatamārā

    Translation

    Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?

56. 56 An-Najm 53:56

    هٰذَا نَذٖيرٌ مِنَ النُّذُرِ الْاُو۫لٰى

    Transliteration

    Hāthā natheerun mina alnnuthuri aloolā

    Translation

    This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners.

57. 57 An-Najm 53:57

    اَزِفَتِ الْاٰزِفَةُۚ

    Transliteration

    Azifati alāzifatu

    Translation

    The Approaching Day has approached.

58. 58 An-Najm 53:58

    لَيْسَ لَهَا مِنْ دُونِ اللّٰهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

    Transliteration

    Laysa lahā min dooni Allāhi kāshifatun

    Translation

    Of it, [from those] besides Allah, there is no remover.

59. 59 An-Najm 53:59

    اَفَمِنْ هٰذَا الْحَدٖيثِ تَعْجَبُونَۙ

    Transliteration

    Afamin hāthā alḥadeethi taʿjaboona

    Translation

    Then at this statement do you wonder?

60. 60 An-Najm 53:60

    وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَۙ

    Transliteration

    Wataḏḥakoona walā tabkoona

    Translation

    And you laugh and do not weep

61. 61 An-Najm 53:61

    وَاَنْتُمْ سَامِدُونَ

    Transliteration

    Waantum sāmidoona

    Translation

    While you are proudly sporting?

62. 62 An-Najm 53:62

    فَاسْجُدُوا لِلّٰهِ وَاعْبُدُوا

    Transliteration

    Faosjudoo lillāhi waoʿbudoo

    Translation

    So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him].
