Surah Al-Muddaththir in Arabic and English

1. 1 Al-Muddaththir 74:1

   يَٓا اَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُۙ

   Transliteration

   Yā ayyuhā almuddaththiru

   Translation

   O you who covers himself [with a garment],

2. 2 Al-Muddaththir 74:2

   قُمْ فَاَنْذِرْۙ

   Transliteration

   Qum faanthir

   Translation

   Arise and warn

3. 3 Al-Muddaththir 74:3

   وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْۙ

   Transliteration

   Warabbaka fakabbir

   Translation

   And your Lord glorify

4. 4 Al-Muddaththir 74:4

   وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْۙ

   Transliteration

   Wathiyābaka faṭahhir

   Translation

   And your clothing purify

5. 5 Al-Muddaththir 74:5

   وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْۙ

   Transliteration

   Waalrrujza faohjur

   Translation

   And uncleanliness avoid

6. 6 Al-Muddaththir 74:6

   وَلَا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُۙ

   Transliteration

   Walā tamnun tastakthiru

   Translation

   And do not confer favor to acquire more

7. 7 Al-Muddaththir 74:7

   وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْؕ

   Transliteration

   Walirabbika faiṣbir

   Translation

   But for your Lord be patient.

8. 8 Al-Muddaththir 74:8

   فَاِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِۙ

   Transliteration

   Faithā nuqira fee alnnāqoori

   Translation

   And when the trumpet is blown,

9. 9 Al-Muddaththir 74:9

   فَذٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسٖيرٌۙ

   Transliteration

   Fathālika yawmaithin yawmun ʿaseerun

   Translation

   That Day will be a difficult day

10. 10 Al-Muddaththir 74:10

    عَلَى الْكَافِرٖينَ غَيْرُ يَسٖيرٍ

    Transliteration

    ʿalā alkāfireena ghayru yaseerin

    Translation

    For the disbelievers - not easy.

11. 11 Al-Muddaththir 74:11

    ذَرْنٖي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحٖيداًۙ

    Transliteration

    Tharnee waman khalaqtu waḥeedān

    Translation

    Leave Me with the one I created alone

12. 12 Al-Muddaththir 74:12

    وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالاً مَمْدُوداًۙ

    Transliteration

    Wajaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdoodān

    Translation

    And to whom I granted extensive wealth

13. 13 Al-Muddaththir 74:13

    وَبَنٖينَ شُهُوداًۙ

    Transliteration

    Wabaneena shuhoodān

    Translation

    And children present [with him]

14. 14 Al-Muddaththir 74:14

    وَمَهَّدْتُ لَهُ تَمْهٖيداًۙ

    Transliteration

    Wamahhadtu lahu tamheedān

    Translation

    And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].

15. 15 Al-Muddaththir 74:15

    ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ اَنْ اَزٖيدَࣗ

    Transliteration

    Thumma yaṭmaʿu an azeeda

    Translation

    Then he desires that I should add more.

16. 16 Al-Muddaththir 74:16

    كَلَّاؕ اِنَّهُ كَانَ لِاٰيَاتِنَا عَنٖيداًؕ

    Transliteration

    Kallā innahu kāna liāyātinā ʿaneedān

    Translation

    No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

17. 17 Al-Muddaththir 74:17

    سَاُرْهِقُهُ صَعُوداًؕ

    Transliteration

    Saorhiquhu ṣaʿoodān

    Translation

    I will cover him with arduous torment.

18. 18 Al-Muddaththir 74:18

    اِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَۙ

    Transliteration

    Innahu fakkara waqaddara

    Translation

    Indeed, he thought and deliberated.

19. 19 Al-Muddaththir 74:19

    فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَۙ

    Transliteration

    Faqutila kayfa qaddara

    Translation

    So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

20. 20 Al-Muddaththir 74:20

    ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَۙ

    Transliteration

    Thumma qutila kayfa qaddara

    Translation

    Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

21. 21 Al-Muddaththir 74:21

    ثُمَّ نَظَرَۙ

    Transliteration

    Thumma nathara

    Translation

    Then he considered [again];

22. 22 Al-Muddaththir 74:22

    ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَۙ

    Transliteration

    Thumma ʿabasa wabasara

    Translation

    Then he frowned and scowled;

23. 23 Al-Muddaththir 74:23

    ثُمَّ اَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْـبَرَۙ

    Transliteration

    Thumma adbara waistakbara

    Translation

    Then he turned back and was arrogant

24. 24 Al-Muddaththir 74:24

    فَقَالَ اِنْ هٰذَٓا اِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُۙ

    Transliteration

    Faqāla in hāthā illā siḥrun yutharu

    Translation

    And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

25. 25 Al-Muddaththir 74:25

    اِنْ هٰذَٓا اِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِؕ

    Transliteration

    In hāthā illā qawlu albashari

    Translation

    This is not but the word of a human being."

26. 26 Al-Muddaththir 74:26

    سَاُصْلٖيهِ سَقَرَ

    Transliteration

    Saoṣleehi saqara

    Translation

    I will drive him into Saqar.

27. 27 Al-Muddaththir 74:27

    وَمَٓا اَدْرٰيكَ مَا سَقَرُؕ

    Transliteration

    Wamā adrāka mā saqaru

    Translation

    And what can make you know what is Saqar?

28. 28 Al-Muddaththir 74:28

    لَا تُبْقٖي وَلَا تَذَرُۚ

    Transliteration

    Lā tubqee walā tatharu

    Translation

    It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

29. 29 Al-Muddaththir 74:29

    لَـوَّاحَةٌ لِلْبَشَرِۚ

    Transliteration

    Lawwāḥatun lilbashari

    Translation

    Blackening the skins.

30. 30 Al-Muddaththir 74:30

    عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَؕ

    Transliteration

    ʿalayhā tisʿata ʿashara

    Translation

    Over it are nineteen [angels].

31. 31 Al-Muddaththir 74:31

    وَمَا جَعَلْنَٓا اَصْحَابَ النَّارِ اِلَّا مَلٰٓئِكَةًۖ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ اِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِلَّذٖينَ كَـفَرُواۙ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذٖينَ اُو۫تُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذٖينَ اٰمَنُٓوا اٖيمَاناً وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذٖينَ اُو۫تُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَۙ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذٖينَ فٖي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَٓا اَرَادَ اللّٰهُ بِهٰذَا مَثَلاًؕ كَذٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللّٰهُ مَنْ يَشَٓاءُ وَيَـهْدٖي مَنْ يَشَٓاءُؕ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ اِلَّا هُوَؕ وَمَا هِيَ اِلَّا ذِ كْرٰى لِلْبَشَرِࣖ

    Transliteration

    Wamā jaʿalnā aṣḥāba alnnāri illā malāikatan wamā jaʿalnā ʿiddatahum illā fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitāba wayazdāda allatheena āmanoo eemānan walā yartāba allatheena ootoo alkitāba waalmuminoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maraḏun waalkāfiroona māthā arāda Allāhu bihāthā mathalan kathālika yuḏillu Allāhu man yashāo wayahdee man yashāo wamā yaʿlamu junooda rabbika illā huwa wamā hiya illā thikrā lilbashari

    Translation

    And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.

32. 32 Al-Muddaththir 74:32

    كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِۙ

    Transliteration

    Kallā waalqamari

    Translation

    No! By the moon

33. 33 Al-Muddaththir 74:33

    وَالَّيْلِ اِذْ اَدْبَرَۙ

    Transliteration

    Waallayli ith adbara

    Translation

    And [by] the night when it departs

34. 34 Al-Muddaththir 74:34

    وَالصُّبْحِ اِذَٓا اَسْفَرَۙ

    Transliteration

    Waalṣṣubḥi ithā asfara

    Translation

    And [by] the morning when it brightens,

35. 35 Al-Muddaththir 74:35

    اِنَّهَا لَاِحْدَى الْكُـبَرِۙ

    Transliteration

    Innahā laiḥdā alkubari

    Translation

    Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]

36. 36 Al-Muddaththir 74:36

    نَذٖيراً لِلْبَشَرِۙ

    Transliteration

    Natheeran lilbashari

    Translation

    As a warning to humanity -

37. 37 Al-Muddaththir 74:37

    لِمَنْ شَٓاءَ مِنْكُمْ اَنْ يَتَقَدَّمَ اَوْ يَتَاَخَّرَؕ

    Transliteration

    Liman shāa minkum an yataqaddama aw yataakhkhara

    Translation

    To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.

38. 38 Al-Muddaththir 74:38

    كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهٖينَةٌۙ

    Transliteration

    Kullu nafsin bimā kasabat raheenatun

    Translation

    Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained

39. 39 Al-Muddaththir 74:39

    اِلَّٓا اَصْحَابَ الْيَمٖينِؕۛ

    Transliteration

    Illā aṣḥāba alyameeni

    Translation

    Except the companions of the right,

40. 40 Al-Muddaththir 74:40

    فٖي جَنَّاتٍؕۛ يَتَسَٓاءَلُونَۙ

    Transliteration

    Fee jannātin yatasāaloona

    Translation

    [Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other

41. 41 Al-Muddaththir 74:41

    عَنِ الْمُجْرِمٖينَۙ

    Transliteration

    ʿani almujrimeena

    Translation

    About the criminals,

42. 42 Al-Muddaththir 74:42

    مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فٖي سَقَرَ

    Transliteration

    Mā salakakum fee saqara

    Translation

    [And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"

43. 43 Al-Muddaththir 74:43

    قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلّٖينَۙ

    Transliteration

    Qāloo lam naku mina almuṣalleena

    Translation

    They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,

44. 44 Al-Muddaththir 74:44

    وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكٖينَۙ

    Transliteration

    Walam naku nuṭʿimu almiskeena

    Translation

    Nor did we used to feed the poor.

45. 45 Al-Muddaththir 74:45

    وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَٓائِضٖينَۙ

    Transliteration

    Wakunnā nakhooḏu maʿa alkhāiḏeena

    Translation

    And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],

46. 46 Al-Muddaththir 74:46

    وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدّٖينِۙ

    Transliteration

    Wakunnā nukaththibu biyawmi alddeeni

    Translation

    And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

47. 47 Al-Muddaththir 74:47

    حَتّٰٓى اَتٰينَا الْيَـقٖينُؕ

    Transliteration

    Ḥattā atānā alyaqeenu

    Translation

    Until there came to us the certainty."

48. 48 Al-Muddaththir 74:48

    فَمَا تَنْفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعٖينَؕ

    Transliteration

    Famā tanfaʿuhum shafāʿatu alshshāfiʿeena

    Translation

    So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.

49. 49 Al-Muddaththir 74:49

    فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضٖينَۙ

    Transliteration

    Famā lahum ʿani alttathkirati muʿriḏeena

    Translation

    Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away

50. 50 Al-Muddaththir 74:50

    كَاَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُسْتَنْفِرَةٌۙ

    Transliteration

    Kaannahum ḥumurun mustanfiratun

    Translation

    As if they were alarmed donkeys

51. 51 Al-Muddaththir 74:51

    فَرَّتْ مِنْ قَسْوَرَةٍؕ

    Transliteration

    Farrat min qaswaratin

    Translation

    Fleeing from a lion?

52. 52 Al-Muddaththir 74:52

    بَلْ يُرٖيدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ اَنْ يُؤْتٰى صُحُفاً مُنَشَّرَةًۙ

    Transliteration

    Bal yureedu kullu imriin minhum an yutā ṣuḥufan munashsharatan

    Translation

    Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.

53. 53 Al-Muddaththir 74:53

    كَلَّاؕ بَلْ لَا يَخَافُونَ الْاٰخِرَةَؕ

    Transliteration

    Kallā bal lā yakhāfoona alākhirata

    Translation

    No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

54. 54 Al-Muddaththir 74:54

    كَلَّٓا اِنَّهُ تَذْكِرَةٌۚ

    Transliteration

    Kallā innahu tathkiratun

    Translation

    No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder

55. 55 Al-Muddaththir 74:55

    فَمَنْ شَٓاءَ ذَكَرَهُؕ

    Transliteration

    Faman shāa thakarahu

    Translation

    Then whoever wills will remember it.

56. 56 Al-Muddaththir 74:56

    وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ اِلَّٓا اَنْ يَشَٓاءَ اللّٰهُؕ هُوَ اَهْلُ التَّقْوٰى وَاَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ

    Transliteration

    Wamā yathkuroona illā an yashāa Allāhu huwa ahlu alttaqwā waahlu almaghfirati

    Translation

    And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
